I, in my innocence, decided to google for "tickling trout"--story research, doncha know--and the first page of results contained nothing but references to "The Art of Tickling Trout and other Sensual Pleasures".

This must be an ironic title. Surely?

May I ask a really stupid question? What is tickling trout? A trout is a fish, isn't it? Why do you tickle it?

It is a bit of an odd phrase, isn't it? Tickling trout is a technique used by poachers to lull a trout--or indeed any other river fish--into a false sense of security. (Some folks claim that tickling the fish will actually hypnotise it.) This then lets the poacher slide his hand under the fish's belly and flip them out onto the bank of the river.

I don't know why anyone would call it a sensuous activity. Maybe it is for the fish, though!

Basically, it's supposed to be an alternative fishing technique when you don't have a hook & line.
