We have no heating. Woe. Of course, I noticed this about ten minutes after Dave set off for London. I look forward to yet another muddled conversation with our landlady. (You'd think that leaving an instruction manual for a boiler would be sensible, right? Just another reason why I hate gas central heating. More stuff to go wrong.)

Also, I have food poisoning. I should probably rescue the packaging from the bin and report it. I have vague memories that you should report food poisoning, or perhaps that is only for takeaways and restaurant meals and not supermarket ready-meals?

rockfic--Wicked is awesome. (Once you get used to the POV, that is. I spent ten minutes squinting at it and trying to figure out what the dude was trying to do. I've settled into a wary acceptance now. But the storyline is grand.) It is keeping me warm through the awesome power of laughter. Thank-you!

ETA: After an incredible amount of hassle--roll on owning my own fucking house--an engineer will be with me sometime before 11am. I probably could have forced him here sooner, but I'm not going to die overnight. I'll simply feel like I'm freezing to death.

My parents are getting their central heating fixed over the next three days. I offered them the oil heater from my bedroom and even disturbed a sleeping boy to get it ready for my dad to pick up, but they seem to be bearing it out.

At least it's supposed to being mild the next few days :(

Report the food poisoning. You might get some free food out of it ;)

Dave's dad is coming over at lunchtime to prod the boiler. I'm hoping that it's just as simple as the pilot light getting blown out by high wind. At any rate, it's jolly chilly in here.

I suspect that your folks are much hardier than I am. I've gotten soft since I moved down south ;) I do miss underfloor heating though....

I mean, not right this minute, but you can throw me into the mix for three days without at the house...what...in November, if I recall correctly. Oh, and one full day about two weeks ago, here at work.

But...

nothing beats the four days last year, at Christmas time, when it was in the single digits. I buried the contents of the fridge/freezer in the front yard. Kept quite nicely.

I hope it's back on by now!

Alas, it looks to be dead. My FIL came round and prodded it and he can't make it work. He did leave a space heater behind so I'm marginally warmer. I've left a voicemail for our landlady and I suppose I'll have to try calling her again this evening if she doesn't bother to get back to me. (I'm betting that she won't.)

I have nothing but bad memories of all my landlords during Winter. They never fixed anything. [sigh] I had a heater in Greenwich Village that basically came on whenever it wanted to. It's arrival was heralded by the pipes rattling and banging and making more noise than actually giving out heat.

I got a fleece blanket and developed a mad gleam in my eye as I grinned and said, "Fucking A. I love the cold!"

Somewhat amazingly, she did get in touch! She's now calling a gas engineer and will get back to me. Which would be good as it's about 9C in here, maybe as high as 12 in the computer room :(

Hope you get over your food poisoning soon--NOT fun to have.

And hope you get your heat on soon, I can sympathise with not having any heat on a very cold day. Our old office had major problems with its heating system one year and we all about froze to death. I had a baby space heater but it was barely enough to keep my office from being a meat locker.

Always report food poisoning - to your doctor, to the place you bought the food, and to the local environmental health department if nobody is willing to help. If food is being stored badly or contaminated somehow they need to know. The quack might need a stool sample - oh, joy... try and talk to the nurse, they're usually more approachable.

Oh, and hyooj sympathies on the heating thing. Oh boy, do you have my sympathies! *Sends hot tea and warm blankets*

How the hell did you cope with no heating for more than one day? I'm holed up in the front room and I've gone so far as to put a towel at the foot of the door to make sure no drafts steal my precious heat. I'm also keeping an eye out for any tricksy hobbits that might chance their luck....

I have the circulation of an octagenarian, I suspect.

I'm not sure that it's proper full-blown food-poisoning. I certainly have no wish to do the whole medical route, but I'm more than happy to call Sainsbury's/EH and whinge.
