Or indeed, a trifle bowl.

After much searching in amongst a sea of opaque and chipped bowls, Dave and I triumphed and bought a bowl with the tiniest chip out of the rim. (Yes, I know. Chipped bowls are unhygenic but I have a trifle bowl, and now I can make trifles for every family event! Especially now I've discovered that the rest of Dave's family are of the trifle-loving persuasion.)

So, the Great Christmas Trifle of 2005 is on!

Chocolate cake, cranberry compote, chocolate cream, chocolate sauce, and lashings of whipped cream. Everything will be liberally doused in whatever booze I deem suitable to tie together the flavours. At the moment, mandarin liqueur looks a strong possibility since the cranberries will be cooked with orange juice....

If I get bored I may make some sort of sugar sculpture for the top. Maybe a Christmas star!

(You'd think I was hopped up on sugar, wouldn't you? Alas, no. I really am this excited about a trifle bowl and the certainty of trifle on Christmas Day. [livejournal.com profile] glammetalkitten will understand. She's famous for her trifle love.)

I recall the first time I was confronted with Trifle. I was sweet sixteen and a guest in an English family for two weeks (community college exchange program). One fine evening my host mother served Trifle. It was the exact same color as the sweat suit she was wearing day and night: a blindingly bright pink. Can you imagine I was scared to eat it?

But I like Trifle. I really do. ;P

Oh, and the whole hygienic/unhygienic issue with chipped dishes is way overrated. As long as you're not using it for raw meat and clean it in the dishwasher you should be fine.

Ah yes. The traditional Sherry Trifle. It does tend to be... lurid. I'm glad you weren't put off by it!

I simply cannot wait for Christmas Day so I can commune with trifle. Of course, it has to be made first. At the moment, I am just contemplating communing with trifle.

I really want to make it tomorrow, but I shall have to wait until Saturday otherwise it'll be that little bit too soggy.

I'm still too excited at the prospect of trifle to be excited over communing with it. I'll reach that stage after I make it, I reckon....

Trifle!!

Trifle sounds yummy...of course, it wouldn't survive five minutes in my house as Dave would commandeer it and devour the whole thing by himself. He's got a sweet tooth like you'd never believe!

I think he'd have trouble polishing off this one. It should feed 10-12 rather generously!!

I dunno...this is a guy that ate almost a whole 9x13 inch pan of lasagna by himself in 2 days...

Never ate a trifle in my life. I suddenly feel like I've been missing on something.

Something sweet and sugary and creamy and boozy.

...can I come visit on Christmas?

You might have had Zuppa Inglese? Tis the same thing.

And you may certainly come and visit, just be warned... I'm not doing the cooking :P

Hooray for trifle! I'm doing a New Year's trifle instead of a Christmas one this year, being as we won't be home for Christmas. Yours sounds decadent. You already know mine will be based around a coconut cake and will definitely include lemon curd....

Your trifle sounds gorgeous, too! I did consider doing that coconut macaroon one that I showed you a few weeks back, but decided to break the family in gently ;)

And I still have only a vague idea of what trifle is (just googled some pics). I don't think I've ever had it. But it sure looks yummy.

It's an English thing. Basically, your traditional trifle will consist of thick layers of: sponge cake spread with jam, fruit doused in sherry, jelly, thick custard, and whipped cream. When made in a glass bowl you should be able to see the distinct layers and gasp in delight at them :) You can see Kate tucking into her 2004 trifle in my shiny new icon.

If I can find a battery charger I'll take a picture of the trifle tomorrow! I'm still very excited.
