I'm having a hard time feeling festive this year, so I decided to ferret through the recs for last year's [livejournal.com profile] yuletide project. For those who are sadly unfamiliar with Yuletide Treasure, it's a rare-fandom Secret Santa project which has been going on since 2003. The available fandoms change each year as more stories pop up in each; for example, there once was a time when Pirates of The Caribbean fic was rare. Imagine that!

Northern Exposure

Paradise...Not Quite Troubleproof Gen.

I loved Northern Exposure; I'm still upset that it was cancelled in its prime. It was one of the most intelligent shows to come out of the early 90s and I've always been bemused that there is so little fanfiction for it, despite a huge fanbase. This story feels like a quietly zany sub-plot and quiet is just the right word for this, I think. Nothing much happens, everyone's just sitting around talking, and it feels comfortable, safe and right.

Absolutely Fabulous

Just Between Us Gen.

Ab Fab was... well, fab. Another great show that I miss a lot. Patsy's voice is spot-on in this little story. I adore her snarky observations: It was scarves this week, Patsy noted, lots of them; her best friend looked like she'd been attacked by a midget's clothesline. The humour is brash and laugh-out-loud funny. Go read!

Black Books

A Very Manny Christmas Gen.

The lovely Dave introduced me to the delights of both Black Books and Bill Bailey. I shall forever be grateful. You should read this story for the sheer comic genius--and character voices--to whit, a snippet:

Bernard looked at the hat with as much dislike as if it had been an actual customer. "I would rather eat a Christmas tarantula off the back of a dead badger with a piece of holly stuck up my backside."

"Christmas tarantula?" Manny was a little thrown.

"You know - Christmas tarantula - what you get in your stocking at Christmas when you haven't been a good...' he waved his hands around irritably. "Anyway, this is beside the point."

Shakespeare--Romeo and Juliet

Waste Our Lights In Vain Slash.

I still can't quite believe that there is Shakespeare fanfic out there--and much less that I've read it--but you know, I have a sneaking suspicion that Shakespeare would approve.

This story is so beautiful and inevitably sad. The writing is lyrical and richly layered--the pears which run throughout the story are a wonderful metaphor. Poor, doomed Mercutio. A must-read.

Jonathan Creek

Killer Instinct Het.

This was so much fun! I love Jonathan and Maddy together and the little snippet that we got of the mystery was superb. I loved Maddy's dream, too :) I may have to search for some more fic in this fandom.

Well, when you think about it, Shakespeare was writing RPF, wasn't he? I mean, all those kings and queens he fictionalized.

Yes, indeed. I was more surprised to find that people had tackled his work--as he's so revered--than anything else.

It is rather [and very] daunting. The language alone must give writers nightmares. Hmm. That's probably an issue, isn't it? To keep or not to keep "thee" and "thou." And, if kept, how to use them correctly.

I decided I'd seen it all when I discovered there's Sherlock Holmes/Dr. Watson slash, so now not much surprises me anymore.
