Fic recs.

I'm all out of news, gossip and even--shock! horror!--whining. So, in lieu of anything of earth-shattering import... I bring you some fic recommendations.

There's a mix of FPS and RPS, and maybe even one gen. Surprisingly enough for me, there's also one het. Go, go Ang!

Story: Duck Soup

Author: [livejournal.com profile] amazonqueenkate

Fandom: House (pairing House/Chase, House/Wilson, NC-17)

I haven't read a lot of House fanfic, but that's because I've only been in the fandom for about two months. (For which you can blame the seductive snarking of [livejournal.com profile] rockfic.) Anyway. I liked this story, over and above all the other House stories I've read recently, because of House's voice. It's so him. The snark, the twisted thought processes, and the dialogue. All Greg House.

Also, I love the style of the piece. Very clever, but not obnoxiously so.

Story: The Ghost Sounds of Horses

Author: [livejournal.com profile] liquidsoliloquy

Fandom: Brokeback Mountain RPS (Heath Ledger/Jake Gyllenhaal. PG-13)

I can't help thinking that if this little story is the forerunner to the inevitable flood of Brokeback Mountain RPS (I have no doubt that the FPS won't hold a candle to Annie Proux's work), then we'll do quite well out of the movie. This story is an unexpected gem.

Normally I loathe and despise heavy uses of repetition in a story, but here... it works. I'm not really sure what to say about the story to hook y'all in. It got under my skin somehow and I keep re-reading it.

So, worth a whirl at any rate.

Story: Henry Penny's Answering Machine

Author: [livejournal.com profile] azarias

Fandom: The Authority (Midnighter, Apollo, Jackson King. OMG, it's gen! Rated R for language and adult subject matter.)

Ahhh, The Authority. Be still my beating heart.

I doubt this story will be of interest to many folks other than [livejournal.com profile] rockfic, but I had to rec it. It has a plot. A large, complex plot. This isn't one of those brainless PWPs, where the author attempts to show the beauty of Midnighter and Apollo's relationship... and fails dismally. This particular story wouldn't be out of place within the comic itself. It fits right into the Ellis run, when everything was perfect.

In other words: it's a huge and most welcome breath of fresh air. Alas, it will make zero sense to anyone who doesn't know the canon.

Sorry.

Story: Hurricane Jack

Author: [livejournal.com profile] shrift

Fandom: Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl (Jack/Will, NC-17)

Shrift is a goddess. It's as simple as that. Every time I read her work I feel like tossing in the towel. In a good way.

Jack, Will, an awful lot of rum, and the obligatory singing of sea shantys. Shrift captures Jack's internal voice beautifully and managed to make my sides ache beautifully with laughter. Allow me to quote a particularly fabulous paragraph (which is very hard to do as they're all wonderful. I'll stop fangirling now.):

Jack hums under his breath as they sway along toward the sea, and soon enough the smell of home reaches his nose. The smell of home for Jack vaguely consists of the following things: dead fish, sweat, rotting water, pitch, brine, black powder, pomegranate. (There is no satisfactory explanation for the pomegranate.)

You must, must read this. Even if you're not a fan of pirates. Although, how can anyone not love swashbuckling pirates? (Also, it's hot.)

Story: Mr Trunchbull

Author: [livejournal.com profile] demoerin

Fandom: Scrubs xo Matilda (JD/Miss Trunchbull, PG-13)

Okay. This is crack. But good crack. In case you haven't stumbled across [livejournal.com profile] ithurtsmybrain in your travels around t'internet, let me enlighten you: make a list of fandoms, a very long list. Throw it all into a hat. Shake with vim and vigour. Pick out pairings and write them down, cracktastic though they may be. Then watch with glee as brave souls attempt to write them.

Absolutely evil. And addictive.

Mr Trunchbull is the most unlikely of pairings, however, it works. (In entirely evil and slightly disturbing ways, I might add. I'm not sure what's more disturbing--the thought of Miss Trunchbull in love, or the thought of Roald Dahl's books having fanfic. But onwards!)

JD is in-character. Miss Trunchbull is also in-character as far as I recall, having watched Matilda far more recently than I've actually read the book. Never in a million years did I expect to enjoy this, far less laugh. But I did both. In spades.

Oh, and Doctor Cox. Well, my love for him is boundless, I tell you:

"You mean that’s really her name?" Dr Cox’s face broke into wrinkly lines of joy. "Oh! There really is a Santa Clause…" He bit a knuckle, and his voice cracked a bit when he spoke next. "I mean, the material this provides me with…"

Happy days....

Story: And In This Moment

Author: [livejournal.com profile] thete1

Fandom: Justice League/Justice League Unlimited. (The Flash/Batman, NC-17)

This? Broke my brain. For hours, and hours. Very, very hot. So hot, you should purchase a large block of ice before reading. (Don't blame me if you ignore the well-meaning advice and find yourself in dire need of ice afterwards!)

I find myself very appreciative of Flash's metabolism, and also of Batman's incredible self-control. Right up until Wally makes him whimper. I think that's where my brain first fractured, come to think of it. The thought of Batman whimpering and losing it? Very good indeed.

I don't think you need any huge understanding of the DC Universe to get this fic. You can read it as an honest to gods PWP, or... you can spend a happy afternoon peeling the layers off and digging into Batman's fears.

Either way, you're guaranteed a good time.

Story: Dodge-Town

Author: [livejournal.com profile] shrift

Fandom: Batman-verse (Robin III/Nightwing [Tim/Dick], NC-17)

*beams* Another Shrift! Don't groan, I won't fangirl that much.

Anyway. Once upon a time, [livejournal.com profile] thete1, doyenne of the DC fandoms, issued a cliche challenge. Now, the DC universe being so beautifully cracktastic all on its own, naturally inspires really odd cliches. One of these is... sex-pollen. I really shouldn't need to say any more than that....

I love Tim's inner voice. So very Timmy. Dick's bedroom athleticism is to die for; I can't imagine someone picking up a Batman comic and not wondering--even fleetingly--what someone so bendy would be like in bed. Maybe that's just my warped mind at work though.

Much as I love the rest of the story, it would be nothing without the scenes set the next day. Shrift is kind enough to feature my favourite non-vigilante character--Bernard Dowd. Bernard is swishy, snarky and slightly askew to the rest of the world. The scene in the diner with him, Tim and Dick is hysterical.

Do read it.

Ooh is that robin when they made him handsome and a bit like Bruce Lee?

Um, I don't know? I always found Dick more handsome than Tim; however, Tim has more martial arts skills.... Either way, you'll get both of them.

(Yes, I am ignoring Jason for he irritated me muchly.)

I think it was the 3rd one. That's when I was reading it... Dick became Nightwing? Jason got bumped of by the Joker? Tim? Was the the one that was around when they tried to bump off Batman circa issue 500? Hmmm.

(i'm a geek.)

Um... have you seen the size of our comic collection? It's perhaps doubled since you were last here ;)

Bruce fired Dick. Dick became Nightwing (after Superman told him about Nightwing on Krypton). Jason tried to steal hubcaps off the Batmobile, was promptly caught by Batman. (Interestingly, the original Jason was actually blond, but the Crisis on Infinite Earths rebooted him to have black hair.) And yes, was bludgeoned thoroughly by the Joker in Iran (or Iraq), before being blown up. (This really isn't the end of things, though.)

Bumping off Batman? Do you mean the Knightsfall arc, where his back was broken by Bane? Tim was definitely around by then. I can't believe you think he's more handsome than Dick!! Poor Tim. Full of trauma these days.

Oh! You're probably unaware of this. There's been a fourth Robin. A blonde-haired chippie called Stephanie. Previously known as The Spoiler. But we're now back to Tim.

Tis a shame you can't come over to read comics :(

Seeing as I read "The Ghost Sounds of Horses" and promptly put it in my memory file. And "And In This Moment" made ME whimper... I MUST read all the others - even if I have no clue about the universe, fandom or anything.

I must dig out my comic boxes on the weekend... I must... OH! Ang, the artist I die for when he does Green Arrow - Mike Grell. I ADORE MIKE GRELL'S ARTWORK. He did some Legion of Super Heroes as well, I believe. 70s, if my memory serves.

I do believe that the Legion of Super Heroes has been brought back, briefly. Unless I'm confusing them with some other team. Oh, yes. Superboy v2 gets hurled into the future--in the rebooted Teen Titans--and reforms the Legion.

I'll try and dig out some GA stories for you :D I do like Ollie--love Roy and Conner too--but sometimes he just pushes my 'sexist pig' buttons. Depends who's writing him, of course!

*dusts off the dead dust* Thank you.

Yes, you did squee like mad over this, but if I remember, I was writing at the time and didn't want to get sidetracked. *LOL* So I just read it today. OMFG!!!

So... that stuff I sent you today.... crap, utter crap, right at this moment, basking in the afterglow of Shrifty Porn. OH... the fucking CUTENESS of Dick fucking Grayson... I want to slash him with The Dane now... *smacks head* WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO ME??? *LOL*

It is NOT crap.

But yes. Dick is hot. I'm surprised you don't want to slash him with Ollie though....
