Good grief.

I thought I was going insane, but no... it really did take five minutes for the ceramic hob to bring my frying pan up to usable temperature. I really, really miss my gas cooker. Having looked in the oven, I suspect that I won't be doing huge amounts of baking. It's small and there's only one shelf; I don't think that it's even big enough to fit in two 8" cake tins :(

Oh well. Time to go and boil some water. Wonder how long that'll take?

Please don't tell me this is the oven/stove you're going to use on a regular basis once you settled in. Please tell me that this state of affairs is only temporary. Like a hot plate or something that you use while waiting for your real cooker to be hooked up.

Alas, no. My gorgeous gas cooker is going into storage and I will have to... adapt. I don't know how mum copes with her ceramic hob, but already I miss the sheer responsiveness of a gas hob. Electricity sucks.

Oh well. Six months or so. I guess I'll live.

This is an electric range, I take it? I despise those things. One of the keys to them is waiting for the burners to fully heat up to the temperature you set it at before you put the pan on and to take the pans off when you want it to cool down a bit. Give them time to adjust. Still, it takes a lot of patience and a lot of swearing to deal with them if you are used to gas. What's worse is adjusting from a professional grade gas range to even an ordinary home range. You can't really properly saute on a home gas range. In spite of this, they are still a thousand times better then electric.

You have my sympathies. Truly.

Yes, it's a ceramic hob powered by electricity--completely smooth top to the cooker with cooking spaces marked out, as opposed to the traditional electric cooker with spiral exposed elements. Very pretty but very ineffective.

Still, at the end of the day, at least I've managed to produce a healthy dinner. I am Borg. I will adapt....

the ceramic hob

Is it an older model? I use a ceramic hob as well and it's real quick.

Sucks. :(

I'm not sure, Brigitte. It looks sparkly new, but then they do tend to clean up pretty well....

No baking? No baking? No! This is just... wrong. :( No chance of getting a better oven...?

Alas, it's a built-in oven and hob. All very swish, but less than adequate. Maybe it would be fine for someone who doesn't actually like cooking--I find it really hard to believe that a family of four lived here before the house was sold to the present landlord, how'd you get a roast in there?--but for my purposes I'm not overjoyed.

I'll toss a few tins in the oven and play with the shelf later on. Might need to call mum, which is just plain scary. I can't remember the last time I called her for cooking advice :P

I find it really hard to believe that a family of four lived here...

They must be one of them modern folks, who cook everything in the microwave or buy ready-made meals they just have to heat [canned soup, etc.]. Or maybe they ate out or ordered in all the time...? A lot of people do this. Cooking is quickly becoming a lost art. [so says Rick who can't boil water]

Ugh, we have something similar and it sucks harder than the sucky electric hob we had at the flat in Barnet. When we have monies and our house is no longer falling apart, I am plotting a whole new kitchen complete with gas hob. Mmmm flames.

Mmm... gas.... Once you've cooked with gas it hurts to go back to electric. Plus, gas is so much cheaper!!

Much sympathy to you, too.
