Tentative yay.
Aug. 9th, 2005 08:07 pmOkay, the gods may be smiling favourably on us.
I have put down a conditional holding deposit on a house. Its very nice and has pretty much everything that we want. I say conditional as we just need to get the landlord to sort out plumbing for the dishwasher--I'll be damned if I'm putting a perfectly good dishwasher in the shed for six months--and a pump for the shower to up the water pressure. The landlord is getting someone in tomorrow to quote for the above, and she seems really keen to let it to us. A bit of flirting with the letting agent seems to go a long way. Why yes, I am shameless.
Keep your fingers crossed, sacrificial knives honed and goats tied to the altar....

Date: 2005-08-10 12:47 am (UTC)I do hope it works out for you. It's interesting. In the cinema I have seen that has any scenes dealing with finding housing, there is a line out the block. I thought that was an exageration...but I suppose not.
Pray tell, the cause?

Date: 2005-08-10 08:17 am (UTC)We haven't seen any lines snaking around corners, but the majority of houses are being let within 24 hours of them going on the market. When we gave notice on our current house, we failed to take into consideration that we'd be competing against students and new university staff for properties and thus, we've had a hell of a time finding a place.
I think we've looked at seven places in total, and had three viewings cancelled as the property was let shortly before we arrived. Very sucky. In comparison, when we did the search for our current house, I looked at three houses and found this one on the second day of our search. Previous house, we only looked at two places and made a quick decision.

Date: 2005-08-10 08:41 am (UTC)Buying _can_ be easier. It sounds like you've had a particular nightmare with this, and I've never had this many problems sorting out rented accommodation, but then I've never had to do it at such a distance.
But we had a complete nightmare with the buying for the first month (thanks to being screwed around by the mortgage advisor at an estate agents), but after that it was easy! I think being at the bottom of a very short chain helped us out quite a lot.
