I've always been interested in sex. Frankly, who isn't? I've come a long way, though, from the giggling girl who found a stack of girlie magazines in Daddy's wardrobe whilst searching for Christmas presents.... On the way I passed through the 'Mills & Boon' phase; the 'Jackie Collins' one; the book whose title I cannot remember, but the author was somewhere in the W's (the cover had an iris on a black background, if anyone feels helpful) where the wife's controlling husband had her clit pierced without consent (the little bell he had hung from the hoop is an enduring memory!); the 'Nancy Friday' stage, in which I encountered many perversions and discovered I was mostly normal; and then came (fnar fnar), fan fiction. Somewhere along the way I also had a lot of sex.

Discovering fan fiction was like falling down the rabbit-hole in 'Alice in Wonderland'. I started gently, on the fringes of the good stuff. My first choices of reading material were the 'Buffy: The Vampire Slayer' and 'Angel: The Series' fandoms. I gleefully read epic romances between Willow and Angel who would have had a much healthier relationship than Buffy and Angel were doomed to have (oops, my romantic heart is showing), time-travel 'What If' stories, and managed to completely miss the steamy underbelly of the fandom. It was only after reading DC Wildstorm's 'The Authority' comic-books, in which two of the central characters are openly gay males in a relationship that I started to wonder about gay fan fiction. 'The Midnighter' and 'Apollo' were really hot together in the little glimpses we were treated to officially; what did they get up to whilst the readers eyes were turned elsewhere?  And how did they get together?

At times like these, Google is my friend. A few searches turned up a handful of stories. One story in particular caught my eye. It was both intelligently written and hot. And no typos! The author had plenty other stories on her site, which were mainly about rock bands. Yes, rock bands. However we're not talking about rockers getting it on with groupies before, during and after a gig; but rockers getting hot, sweaty and well-fucked by their band-mates. Wow.

My mind veered away from it; it just seemed...wrong. In retrospect, that's exactly what attracted me back after a few months of the concept festering in my mind. Forbidden.... So I tried a Guns 'n' Roses fic. The world didn't end, the devil didn't appear behind me cackling madly and my immortal soul still appeared to be intact. So I read a little more, and even more. I followed links madly, joined groups and raped and pillaged the stories.

For a little while I segued gracefully into the 'Angel' fandom and read many a steamy tale of Angel(us) and Spike. The appeal there isn't just their physical beauty, preternatural strength, or even the fact that they're vampires. No, it's the conflict that's tightly wound through their entire relationship. And if the conflict is expressed non-verbally in the form of some seriously hot sex, I'm definitely interested. You can't beat a bit of (well-written) blood-play.

Once again I returned to the concept of rockers getting it on and real person slash (RPS). This time I tried some of the author's Metallica stories which had previously seemed ludicrous to me – they're four very straight guys; I couldn't picture them shagging each other senseless. And that turned into part of the appeal; seduction of a straight man (whether in a very calculated manner, or a simple caveman approach) is hot. Of course, as far as we know, these metal gods are straight and happily married in reality. But what if they weren't entirely straight? It seems naïve to believe that they've never experimented whilst on the road. All those long drunken journeys on crappy tour buses, gigs in hick towns where none of the women were up to even a very low standard. You've got to relieve the frustration somehow, right? And what if it went further than just mutual blow jobs? I bet things could get very messy if emotions entered the equation, especially if they weren't reciprocated. See, conflict already....

One thing that I never considered when I became involved in this subset of fan fiction was that I would end up writing it too. It's been a shock to the system. Prior to my recent writing, my last serious attempt at fiction was Higher English in high school. So, well over 10 years ago. I've found writing fan fiction to be both nerve-wracking and fun at the same time. It's also a technical challenge – getting the grammar correct is quite a task, when you have barely considered it for so long.

My first effort was decidedly sex and dialogue free, but still (apparently) managed to be hot. Or “dirty niiiiiiiice”, as one reviewer put it. The second was a real departure from the norm; I was given an glorious image of James Hetfield (Metallica), wrestling shirt-less in the woods with a trickster. This then set my brain thinking and before I knew what had happened, I'd spent six hours writing. I love mythology, folk tales and anything supernatural or indeed, preternatural, so a trickster turned out to be just my kind of thing. My trickster leads Hetfield on a mischievous chase through the woods before having his wicked way with him. And it is very wicked indeed. Puck's idea of seduction would probably be classed by many as rape; but he can get away with it as it's part of his nature. Our hapless hero does end up enjoying himself, before having a final trick played upon him by Puck. Poor James.

In rapid succession to this, I'm now sketching out the bones of a sequel. As this involves triple the amount of characters with multiple pairings, it's going to become a multi-chapter mini-epic. Wow. I can't believe that I'm considering writing this when I wept and wailed about writing a mere 450 words for my first fic a month ago. My mind is whirring with possibilities and I feel much more capable of capturing them on paper than I've ever felt before.

So I'm now on another adventure. Where will this one take me? If only Black Lace Books catered for women who want to read slashy stories about men, I'd totally be there.

Thanks luv :) It's nice to do some thinking and actually write about it for once!

The Hetfield I'm writing about here doesn't have a beard. You're safe. I didn't decide on a time period (although, I'm thinking 2002ish before rehab). The sequel would probably be set in 2004 as I want to put Rob in it rather than Jason.

Let me know if you want to read it - it has Comedy Policemen! I'd rate it as an 18 I think.
