Walk like an Egyptian....
Feb. 1st, 2007 11:15 pmTonight I've shimmied, walked like a camel and undulated my arms like a snake. Yup, I went to a belly dancing class and had a fantastic time!
Back in the dark ages, when I was one of those filthy, lazy, waste-of-money students, I did a two-day belly dancing workshop. I can't remember who the dancer was, but she really put us through our paces and I had a great time. So much so, that I've been bashing on about wanting to take a class ever since I've known Dave.
So when I spotted a poster advertising classes in our village hall, I was really keen to go (but at the same time absolutely terrified.) Dave nagged me into going and I'm so glad that he did!
I'm still reeling at how many women in this area want to belly dance! I joined the end of a large queue to pay and people were still streaming in behind me. All in all, I reckon that there were 40-50 women there, and just like all the hype says... there were women of all shapes and sizes there. I absolutely wasn't the fattest person in the room, which is always good for the old ego.
We did loads and I really hope that Anna goes over the moves again next week to make sure that we get them down pat. It was a lot to take in, especially when I haven't danced formally in any style for almost a decade, so I found myself spinning the wrong way an awful lot and feeling rather like a dancing hippo. I hope my coordination comes back!!
Anyway, I may not be able to do a hip drop the way Anna teaches them, but I can still do a hip lift and a proper figure of eight without using my knees so I'm proud of myself. What's really hard are travelling steps and incorporating arm movements, but I'll get the hang of them eventually. I suspect that I'll be full of aches and pains tomorrow, though; I seem to have woken up an astonishing amount of muscles :P
I really, really want a jingly coin-covered hip scarf...
