Tonight Dave felt Speck kick for the first time. Unsurprisingly I'm a blubbering mass of happy tears. I'm sure Speck thinks we're both a bit mad!

Speck is now 24 weeks--well, 22 weeks in foetal terms--and is thus considered viable if he was to be born any time from now onwards. Of course, I do hope he sticks around in my tummy for a few weeks longer! Viability also means that I can start buying things without feeling guilty or worried. Which reminds me....

How long should I expect a newborn to stay in newborn clothes? Should I only buy a tiny number of newborn outfits (or none at all?) and focus mainly on 0-3 month gear? No one has given me a weight estimate yet--frankly, I'm not sure that I'm going to get one from the NHS now--so I remain bemused. And... I presume I should wash all the clothes before Speck arrives, too? Someone said something about chemical coatings on the fibres. God, that was vague!

Well I can only tell you that the one person I know who bought a bunch of newborn stuff had a horse that could only wear one outfit. So you may want to have a couple in case and then have a couple of the 0-3 month. And really - there's no way of knowing how long they'll stay in newborn but it generally isn't very long (usually a matter of days) - especially if you have a good eater. Even the 0-3 months might be outgrown within a month.

And yes, you should wash the clothes first.

And I realize I have none of my own but having helped to raise about 20 of the little rugrats I do remember a bit. ;)

And congrats to Dave for his first Speck kick - I'm glad things are going well.

Thanks, Fiendy :D

I'm hoping that we'll get some use out of this size. At the very least, the babygrows should be fine for a wee while.... I'll wash everything closer to the time, and at least it'll give me something to do when I am very big and bored!

One thing is for sure--they grow FAST, lol. I don't remember exactly how long I was using newborn clothes, but don't buy more than a few (you will have to wash them all the time anyway :), and focus rather on getting the 0-3 months size.

Kicking! Yay :D

Definitely yay for the kicking :) I've been wanting Dave to be able to feel it for so long. (Everyone else at my stage has been wittering away about their husbands being kicked by the baby for weeks, and I've been stewing away in a pit of jealousy.)

Hmm. Jake spent a lot of time in just diapers (especially once he started moving around (rolling, crawling)). It was easier to clean spit-up and explosive poop off his skin than the clothes. :) But other than that, I really have no recollection of how fast he went through the sizes. :(

But yay for Dave! And yay for Speck's viability! *hugs*

Oh god, I dread explosive poo! They grow so fast, I can imagine it would be hard to keep track of what they're wearing....

I would buy only a couple of newborn things - you're sure to get some as gifts as well. Michael was 7lbs 1 oz when he was born and um... 19 inches long, I think... maybe 21. ANYWAY, perfect newborn size. For 3 weeks maybe. Most of my friends who had larger babies... and longer babies... NEVER got the chance to use their newborn clothes. Most of what I had for Michael were the 3 - 6 months size, if I remember correctly. It's easy to deal with when they're a little big, but NOT if they're too small.

And yes... definitely, wash.

We have... four babygrows/vests, four sleepsuits, a couple of hats, bunch of socks, and one layette thing which has an outdoorsy outfit on it. I can't honestly remember what we got on it, other than scratch mitts. I don't think we've gone too overoard for newborn stuff?

I guess I'll pick up some 3-6 month stuff, then! Maybe by that time I'll feel adventurous enough to get Speck into a paid of dungarees. (I am still baffled as to how you get a newborn into dungarees etc, but they're all on sale and in the right size so I presume someone does.)

Pregnancies are generally dated from the beginning of your last period, however, the egg doesn't implant until approximately two weeks into your cycle--depending on the individual, of course. Hence, two ages.

I remember being quite pissed off that I'd put all this energy into knowing exactly when I ovulated, only for it to be dismissed and my LMP used instead :P

and is thus considered viable if he was to be born any time from now onwards

This must be a relief, even if the pregnancy has gone well. About the clothes, yes, I think I would wash them at least once before dressing Speck in them.

WOOOOOOHOOOOOOO!!!! Daddy got to feel Speck kicking!!! Damn, I'll bet that just blew him away :)

I believe a couple of my friends who have had kiddles did wash all of their baby clothes before their little ones arrived. I'd do it just to have everything nice and fresh for Speck when he/she arrives.

It really did. I've been very jealous of Ang and her tummy-friend for a little while :o)

I would definately suggest washing them. I had some clothes that weren't washed and I broke out into hives when I wore them the first time. (And I don't wanna freak you out, I'm just relaying that washing the clothes before wearing is a great idea!)

Plus, I think that the sooner you get Speck used to your environment the less chance you have of some of the smaller allergens causing problems. (case in point, a friend of mom's had a baby, washed the clothes in something different than their home detergent and when they switched, the child was not a happy camper)

Other than that? Everyone's given their advice...and hell I'm just adding to it. *laughs sheepishly*

Congrats Ang, and congrats Dave! *big hugs to both*
