After making the Char Siew Buns, I decided to make some dessert buns. With a thick custard filling. It seemed like a good idea at the time....

Today I have learnt two things:

1. Even the thickest custard will flow like magma as soon as you put it on a piece of dough, no matter how delicately you put it down.
2. I have no idea what 3" is. I surely must be every man's dream. My pieces of baking parchment under the shoddily pleated buns look tiny. I couldn't find a ruler, let alone a tape measure and I know we have at least two builder's measures and one fabric measure in the house. Somewhere.

Oh well. They may yet work out, but I'm not optimistic. At least I managed to avoid my worst case scenario of custard on the ceiling. (It got as far as my nose, instead.)

Three inches is roughly half again longer then the entire length of your thumb.

For the record that's not why I married her :)

But maybe they'll taste good. Once they're in your mouth the taste is all that counts anyway. ;)

3" is 7.5 cm. I know I'm no help.

I'm sure it will taste better than the indications are. :) Good luck!

And sorry, I'm no help with 3". I can't judge length, depth, distance, height, age, time, weight, or anything with numbers. Kind of sad for an accountant, no?

Any number of things above base 10, I'm lost. Numbers and I do not go well together.

Ow! I hope the custard wasn't hot! *hands over a paper towel*

Were the aformentioned dessert buns any good ?*makes big puppy eyes*

They're tasty, but they aren't OMG amazing like the Char Siew Buns were. Alas, few of the buns have the right amount of filling as it took me a while to figure out how on earth to encase it.

I shan't be doing them again, but I will work on a chicken and vegetable filling as that'll be more diet friendly. I should go and find some online calorie calculator so that I can figure out the damage of one bun.

*looks between thumb and square of parchment*

I really have no concept of length. Thanks!

It was the buns, right?

They do taste pretty good, just not worth the effort in the same way as the Char Siew buns. I'd climb a mountain for those....

You're right, they did turn out okay ;) Only minor custard-leakage happened when they rose, so what custard that went into the buns mostly stayed there.

I think that the stereotypical image of women having no spatial awareness and issues with length and so forth, really are genetic issues. Not all of us have them, but when we do... well, we have them all. *sigh* Mind you, women aren't supposed to be able to navigate and I can. Which reminds me of the time that I decided to walk to a different tube station in London after going to the cookbook shop.

I worked out the route from the map at the bus stop, but completely failed to appreciate the distance. It looked closer than the one I'd walked from and it would put me one stop closer to the train station, so I thought, "Why not?"

Why not? It was a bloody three mile walk. I didn't have any trouble finding the tube, but my feet were agony. Still, it was interesting to see how quickly Notting Hill changed from a bright fun-party-fun! place to be, and into a slum. The next time I have a bright idea in London, I'll think it through a little more :P

From the bottom knuckle up. Useless information, but in a pinch, it helps.
