Am re-watching Gross Pointe Blank whilst prepping ingredients for a Lime Pie.  I've had a funny few minutes reminiscing about my grandmother (on my mother's side) whilst chopping limes--was suddenly struck by memories of slicing limes with her in her tiny, cramped kitchen.  And then a memory of preparing a mango for her, when arthritis completely crippled her hands; slicing it up into thin slivers, arranging them on a platter, then carefully squeezing a juicy lime over the whole thing.  Each slice receiving extra verve and zing.  A bittersweet memory.  She died less than a year after that.

I suspect this is why I don't venture into Caribbean cooking very often.  I'd have to think about my mother, her mother, and then spend time wondering just what made them turn out the way they did.  Both have good qualities, but more often than not... they're complete bitches.  Will my limes go mouldy if I speak ill of the dead?  Best use them quickly....

Still.  The memory of sun-warmed limes fresh from the tree, a cramped kitchen, and a perfect pitcher of lemonade will stay with me for many years to come.

Family's tricky that way. [reuful grin] I've never had mango with lime. Should try it. We're at the season where mangos fall on your head if you're not careful.

Hopefully it will be. I reek of limes after squeezing eight of the little beauties.

I just realised that I don't have a pie slice... removing the pie from the pie plate shall be an adventure!

I'm going to pretend I haven't seen the part where you talk about a lime pie, lol, and just say that I love Grosse Pointe Blank :D.

You should definitely try it! It's the second best way to eat mango :D The first way being either in the ocean or the bath tub so that you don't need to worry about juices dripping everywhere. *grin*

Probably for the best. The filling has gone wonky. *sigh*

LOL. True. Messy fruit, mango. And it sticks to your teeth. You spend more time picking out mango bits afterwards than eating the mango.

Depends on the variety. I've eaten some mangos which were just horrible strings with a little bit of nice flesh around them. And there've also been mangoes which were smooth, bright orange and with gorgeous buttery flesh. Not a nasty string in sight!

I've never had a decent mango outside of the West Indies *sigh*

[wishes he could send Ang some; 'cause they liter the roadsides here when they're in season] Everyone and their brother either has or lives near a mango tree. xD So if anything turns out stringy, you can just nip back for more.

Grosse Pointe Blank is one of my most favorite movies. Ever! John Cusack is absolutely gorgeous. And Minnie Driver. :D

A while ago I bought a jar of quince jelly for no particular reason. When I opened it at home I was overwhelmed with memories of my grandfather (my mother's father). He was one of the most warm-hearted people I ever knew. The smell of quince jelly reminded me of him because there was a quince tree in his garden and my grandmother used to make jelly of them. I loved the jelly, but didn't know how sour quinces are. One day, when I was about seven or so, he picked one of the quinces, cut it in half and gave me one part so I could taste it. All those memories and the love I had for him came back to me in that moment when I opened that jar of quince jelly.

He died in the late eighties after having suffered from Alzheimer's for many years.

It's one of my favourite movies too, but for that genre Leon is the best.

Amazing how food brings back memories, isn't it?

Grosse Point Blank is the movie that first got me interested in contract killing!

I've always wanted to say something like that to someone IRL just to see their reaction. Also on my list of freaky things to say are:

When someone asks me a difficult technical question: Let me just consult the bones.

OMG! Do yuo mind if I write a little something around the consulting of chicken bones? My mind just went crazy when I saw that line! No sex, and alas, no tentacles. But perhaps a little creeping dread....

Bah. That comment was brought to you by "Ang not wearing her glasses". Seriously, I've just tossed down 500 words, which don't suck so far *beams*

And you should definitely throw the, "I'm a contract killer" line into conversation sometime. Perhaps a MUDmeet, with a brand-new gullible creator? Why does my mind drift to Saist? :P (Even though he's an old-timer now.)
